Theres no doubt that this is a great product, and one of the top three desktop DAWs available today. It lacks a few of Abletons key features, and theres no way to get those features without spending far more money. So it only really makes sense to think of Bitwig as a companion to Ableton, as a standalone approach to the DAW business. So as long as users dont need a MIDI out, theyll be fine.
There are no doubt some areas where Bitwig lacks, however. To begin with, It was a little surprising that Bitwig didn't include a measurement or time-stretching tool, particularly in a DAW of its size. I also wasn't impressed with the effects. The delay was too short, the reverb and delay were more like phaser or flanger and I found that the pitch correction was a little too high and unruly - though I still managed to smash the pitch in all my examples.
However, Ithink these defects could be addressed with a few small upgrades. A dedicated delay envelope and FX envelope would be especially useful. Bitwig has a healthy module library, so there's plenty of options to hand, but theres no substitute for having the option in-program. And theres also the matter of a polyphonic pitch bend/bender. Meanwhile, theres room for improvement in the sequencing and automation area too. I found that the Bitwig timeline was always remembering the last instrument to be added to a song, even if I added other instruments before or after it. This meant that it wasn't always clear where the newly introduced instrument was in the song, especially if I just wanted to get the sizzle in for a melody. To be fair, Iwas still quite happy to use those tools, but this small quirk could be ironed out. Finally, its a shame that theres no way to duplicate the MIDI data to the Bitwig Controllers, given the wealth of third party products that are available. 3d9ccd7d82
